The First Photovoltaic Diesel Hybrid System in Greece Celebrates Official Opening

In addition to apes and dolphins, since June you will now find something at the Athens Zoo you would not normally expect to see there—a diesel generator combined with a PV system. This PV diesel hybrid system is a joint project whose goal is to create a virtual stand-alone grid. For the research group smartRUE at the Technical University of Athens, this stand-alone grid serves as a demo and training project while also helping the zoo to reduce expensive energy costs.

With SMA’s Fuel Save Solution for large industrial applications, PV can be easily and efficiently integrated into diesel grids. The Sunny Tripower and Sunny Central inverters convert the direct current from PV modules into alternating current and feed it into power supply systems. The SMA Fuel Save Controller manages PV feed-in and the diesel genset remains unaffected. The result: An achievement up to 60 percent of PV capacity compared to installed genset capacity.

Two colleagues from SMA Australia recently travelled to the South Pacific Island of Vava’u, Tonga to commission the SMA Fuel Save Controller for the first time in the Asia Pacific region. The country’s target is to supply 50 percent of the Kingdom’s power demand from renewable energy sources by the year 2020 and in an effort to reduce costs and offset carbon emissions, the island of Vava’u has now integrated photovoltaics into its diesel power generation system. First PV Diesel Hybrid System in the Megawatts Goes into Operation

Photovoltaic systems can substantially reduce the operating costs of industrial plants – like the standalone power system, which SMA equipped with the required fuel save controller, in this mine in South Africa. Diesel generator output: 2 x 800 kVA; photovoltaic output: 1 MWp; savings according to SMA: up to 450,000 liters of diesel per year.

The first PV diesel project in the megawatts was commissioned in Thabazimbi in November 2012 and, as a future development engineer, I was granted the opportunity of being present for the commissioning of this flagship project.
