In addition to apes and dolphins, since June you will now find something at the Athens Zoo you would not normally expect to see there—a diesel generator combined with a PV system. This PV diesel hybrid system is a joint project whose goal is to create a virtual stand-alone grid. For the research group smartRUE at the Technical University of Athens, this stand-alone grid serves as a demo and training project while also helping the zoo to reduce expensive energy costs.
The SMA Solar Academy has recently developed a free web-based training, which provides an overview on the entire topic of Industrial Hybrid Energy Solutions. The online self-learning course takes about half an hour to complete and is open to everyone interested in learning the basics of this topic in an interactive way.
With SMA’s Fuel Save Solution for large industrial applications, PV can be easily and efficiently integrated into diesel grids. The Sunny Tripower and Sunny Central inverters convert the direct current from PV modules into alternating current and feed it into power supply systems. The SMA Fuel Save Controller manages PV feed-in and the diesel genset remains unaffected. The result: An achievement up to 60 percent of PV capacity compared to installed genset capacity.
