The setting: An island with 4,000 inhabitants and three diesel generators to supply power. The mission: Reduce fossil fuel usage and establish a grid stabilizing energy supply based on renewable energies. The challenge: Supply a smart combination of a 2 MWp PV farm and diesel generators; introduce the largest lithium battery storage system in the Caribbean; use the latest SMA products; and develop a new monitoring platform—within the space of just nine months.

Karen Roses Ltd is a family owned business operating six flower farms in Kenya. One of its farms, situated at Eldama Ravine in the Rift Valley, is at an altitude of 2000 meters, is now equipped with a 150 kWp PV system. During the day, the energy demand of the facility is almost entirely fulfilled by the solar power generated. When the national grid is working, the PV plant operates in parallel to significantly reduce the cost of imported energy.
How does it feel to live without electricity? This is something that Souleymane Niang can still remember all too well. Growing up in a village in Senegal, up to the age of 12 he did his homework by the light of a sooty petroleum lamp. Today, an industrial engineer, he is developing the market for PV-diesel hybrid systems in the Earth’s Sunbelt region for SMA — and is playing an instrumental role in ensuring that nobody living in developing and newly industrialized countries will ever have to live without electricity again.
SMA Middle East has won the Middle East Electricity Award 2015 for the best “Solar project of the year.” The project is a PV-diesel hybrid system with almost 200 kW of solar energy. It was installed in April 2014 on the roof of the plastic factory Advanced Plastic Industries (API) in Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon.

The Pando region in the north of Bolivia is extremely remote and sparsely populated. Since a utility grid here is out of the question, the region is supplied with power from a diesel power plant. Until December 2014, just 65 percent of the population had access to electricity. Thanks to a photovoltaic diesel hybrid power plant located in Pando’s capital, Cobija, the region is now on course to having its own sustainable energy supply by eliminating its dependency on fossil fuels and increasing its electrification rate to 80 percent. By expanding its power plant to include solar energy, the local electric utility company will save around 1.9 million liters of diesel fuel each year.
“Electricity for all by 2021″ with this vision in mind the government of Bangladesh has taken many initiatives to ensure electricity for all the people of Bangladesh by 2021, the Golden Jubilee of it’s Independence. Electrifying every individual households in this country is not technically and financially feasible by extending the national grid. Government has initiated the Solar Home System (SHS) based rural electrification program in 2003 through Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) to provide electricity to the off grid areas of Bangladesh. So far the program has installed more than 3.6 million SHS all over the country, The program has become the most successful SHS based rural electrification program in the world. Around 11.5% of the total population of the country are getting benefits from the program.
The world’s largest PV-diesel hybrid power plant with a battery storage system is currently being built in the Bolivian province of Pando. SMA has been not only selected to supply the PV inverters for this project, but also SMA’s Fuel Save Controller, which recently won the Intersolar Award in the PV category. SMA was also selected to provide four newly-developed inverters for large-scale battery storage systems using lithium-ion technology.
