High voltage batteries only arrived in the market in the last 12 months. However their arrival has allowed a number of other technologies to changes the way battery storage can be included in the home. AC-coupled storage using these new technology high voltage batteries (i.e. > 120V DC) has a number of advantages for homes wanting to include battery storage with their solar system. In addition to being a lower cost solution compared to alternatives, AC-coupled storage with high voltage batteries can allow your home to increase its independence from the grid and provide you with greater flexibility in the future to change your system to meet the needs of a growing or changing home. AC-coupled storage with high voltage batteries is also typically a more efficient system meaning you’ll get more energy and power compared to a similar hybrid inverter system. And perhaps best of all, AC-coupled storage can turn any new or existing solar system into a true battery-ready system.
When your PV system loses its premium Feed-in-Tariff (FiT), the priorities and objectives for the energy you generate from your PV system will change. When a FiT is much lower than the cost of grid supplied electricity, the main aim of your PV system will change from generating and exporting as much as possible, to generating and self-consuming as much solar electricity as possible. This change in priority for the PV system means you need to consider changes to your system to ensure you continue to get the greatest financial benefit from your PV system. There are a variety of options available to achieve this and depending on your unique situation, different options will be best suited to meet your individual needs. These option plus some preliminary checks before making decisions are discussed below.

The solar industry is increasingly embracing electric storage as an important growth market. Urbon stressed how the interconnectivity of PV with other energy sources and consumers is changing his company, and thinks an emphasis on cybersecurity is giving SMA a competitive advantage.
An ever increasing number of manufacturers with high brand recognition are offering solutions for decentralized power supply. One of them is Daimler AG. The automobile group has even recently established a separate subsidiary for the development and sales of its stationary energy storage units, Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH. The company’s “new star”, a battery storage system which can be seamlessly integrated into the SMA Flexible Storage System, attracted much interest at Intersolar Europe.
