“Electricity for all by 2021″ with this vision in mind the government of Bangladesh has taken many initiatives to ensure electricity for all the people of Bangladesh by 2021, the Golden Jubilee of it’s Independence. Electrifying every individual households in this country is not technically and financially feasible by extending the national grid. Government has initiated the Solar Home System (SHS) based rural electrification program in 2003 through Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) to provide electricity to the off grid areas of Bangladesh. So far the program has installed more than 3.6 million SHS all over the country, The program has become the most successful SHS based rural electrification program in the world. Around 11.5% of the total population of the country are getting benefits from the program.
The world’s largest PV-diesel hybrid power plant with a battery storage system is currently being built in the Bolivian province of Pando. SMA has been not only selected to supply the PV inverters for this project, but also SMA’s Fuel Save Controller, which recently won the Intersolar Award in the PV category. SMA was also selected to provide four newly-developed inverters for large-scale battery storage systems using lithium-ion technology.
In addition to apes and dolphins, since June you will now find something at the Athens Zoo you would not normally expect to see there—a diesel generator combined with a PV system. This PV diesel hybrid system is a joint project whose goal is to create a virtual stand-alone grid. For the research group smartRUE at the Technical University of Athens, this stand-alone grid serves as a demo and training project while also helping the zoo to reduce expensive energy costs.
The SMA Solar Academy has recently developed a free web-based training, which provides an overview on the entire topic of Industrial Hybrid Energy Solutions. The online self-learning course takes about half an hour to complete and is open to everyone interested in learning the basics of this topic in an interactive way.
With SMA’s Fuel Save Solution for large industrial applications, PV can be easily and efficiently integrated into diesel grids. The Sunny Tripower and Sunny Central inverters convert the direct current from PV modules into alternating current and feed it into power supply systems. The SMA Fuel Save Controller manages PV feed-in and the diesel genset remains unaffected. The result: An achievement up to 60 percent of PV capacity compared to installed genset capacity.
Fuel save controller: standalone power systems offer remarkable new opportunities for photovoltaic technology. Among other things, the combination with diesel generators lowers the costs of fuel consumption. In the meantime, there are new control devices in order to ensure both supply and mains stability with a high share of solar electricity.
Two colleagues from SMA Australia recently travelled to the South Pacific Island of Vava’u, Tonga to commission the SMA Fuel Save Controller for the first time in the Asia Pacific region. The country’s target is to supply 50 percent of the Kingdom’s power demand from renewable energy sources by the year 2020 and in an effort to reduce costs and offset carbon emissions, the island of Vava’u has now integrated photovoltaics into its diesel power generation system. SMA’s Tim Havron and Alexander Kaemmerer would like to share their experience with SMA’s Sunny Blog.
With the commissioning of the mining industry’s first PV-diesel hybrid system, located at Cronimet Mining AG’s chrome mine in South Africa, more companies within this sector are accepting solar as a secure, reliable energy source for remote locations. Tristan Kreagar, manager of Hybrid Energy Solutions for SMA America, was recently interviewed by the Canadian Clean Energy Conferences for the first Renewable Energy and Mining Summit in Toronto, Canada to discuss the future of solar and mining in North America.
On this blog we have already posted numerous articles on PV diesel hybrid systems, each describing PV diesel hybrid systems and what steps must be taken to install and manage such a system. The SMA Fuel Save Solution combines diesel and photovoltaics into a hybrid system, minimizing CO2 emissions and high fuel costs.
This video explains how the system works. Enjoy it.
