The diesel generators have fallen silent. No longer is the idyllic island of St. Eustatius tarnished by their drone and black diesel soot. And gone, too, is the need to buy expensive diesel fuel. In November 2017, this Caribbean island – a “special municipality” of the Netherlands – became that little bit more special thanks to the launch of a diesel-free daytime electricity supply.
At the beginning of December, leading representatives from the fields of solar, storage technology and the digital economy met at the Digital Solar & Storage conference in Munich, an event organized by SolarPower Europe. This was the first time the event had been held and it provided an impressive insight into the digitalization of the energy supply.
The new energy world is smart, connected and decentralized. More and more people are becoming “prosumers” who are active on completely new platforms and utilize their energy efficiently by coupling photovoltaic and wind turbine systems with storage systems and loads.
