Top managers in Germany like to toss around the phrase, “growing pineapple in Alaska.” Among them is former RWE CEO Jürgen Großmann, who has joked that subsidizing solar energy is equally unlikely. Although nobody is actually growing pineapple in Alaska yet, solar energy is gaining ground in that remote U.S. state.
5 MINUTES with Pierre-Pascal Urbon of SMA Solar Technology. Pierre Pascal Urbon, chief executive at Europe’s largest inverter maker, SMA Solar Technology, talked to Recharge at InterSolar Europe. The solar industry is increasingly embracing electric storage as an important growth market. Urbon stressed how the interconnectivity of PV with other energy sources and consumers is changing his company, and thinks an emphasis on cybersecurity is giving SMA a competitive advantage.
Sue Roaf is a solar pioneer. Despite facing opposition from the energy industry at the time and being told by the Government that it would never work “because there is not enough sunshine in Britain”, she has the first grid connected roof integrated PV in the UK in 1995. She has been at the heart of the solar revolution over the last 20 years. In 2016, she decided to upgrade her PV-installation which still worked perfectly to include storage. We sat down with her to ask a few questions.
Plenty of sun, lots of space and high demand for energy as well as a boost from the government. In Turkey, the solar industry is really starting to gain momentum. Growth of 600 MW or more is anticipated in 2016. However, the industry is still in the early stages, and this is difficult, particularly because of the frequently changing authorization requirements, regulations and approving parties. Valerio Natalizia, Regional Manager South Europe is right at the heart of the developments. He explains the most important points from SMA’s point of view.
At Intersolar in Munich, SMA presented the new and completely reworked Sunny Boy inverter family. The new inverter solution in the 3.0/3.6/4.0/5.0 kW power classes not only enables up to 30% savings on energy costs in private households, it also includes a complete service package.
