At SMA we believe in success through teamwork, and some of our Denver colleagues have displayed that conviction to the community by competing in a local softball league. It gives us great pride to announce that the “SMA-Inverters,” the SMA Denver men’s team, are the 2013 Aurora Parks and Recreation League CHAMPS! With an 11-1 record, they have gone from worst to first, the best of seven teams in the league.
Over the last two years solar equipment prices have plummeted by as much as 70 percent, making utility-scale PV plants a more attractive option for investors of all types. However, project ﬁnancing still remains a complex and costly task for many utility- scale PV system developers.
In a previous blog post, we introduced Sioma High School, located in Western Zambia, Africa. The school, which houses more than 600 students each semester, was powered by three dirty, noisy and inefficient diesel generators that cost about $26,000 in fuel per year. However, that all changed when the non-profit organization Empowered by Light created a healthier learning environment for the students by outfitting the school with a 24-kilowatt solar microgrid and battery storage system.
With the commissioning of the mining industry’s first PV-diesel hybrid system, located at Cronimet Mining AG’s chrome mine in South Africa, more companies within this sector are accepting solar as a secure, reliable energy source for remote locations. A big challenge was requested to SMA Service technicians: Alessandro Conti from Italy and six Service employees from Germany were in charge of commissioning the largest PV power plant in Africa – in only 10 days. It was really hot and the work was challenging under such unfavorable access conditions. However, in the end, everything worked out well. Alessandro tells us his experience, ranging from the exciting country and its culture to a fantastic team.
