Off to California for an SMA Internship

Kurzurlaub-in-Santa-Cruz_sma

Hello everyone!

I’m one of the two lucky trainees who got to go to Rocklin, California to complete a 10-week internship and learn more about the US and its people and culture. Sirin (my fellow trainee) and I are both living in our own little apartments in Roseville, a small neighboring city, and have been assigned a company car while we’re here. And let me tell you something: That car’s a godsend. Sure, driving to work takes only about five minutes, but the distance is not the problem – it’s the heat! The temperatures around here usually hover around 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius), and everywhere you go, the AC is cranked up, which takes a bit of getting used to.

Basic Information About Designing Systems for Self-consumption

Photovoltaic power

Now that grid parity has been reached in Germany, self-consumption of solar energy has become the most cost-efficient way to operate a new PV system. The new motto: Use the electricity you generate for your own needs instead of feeding it into the grid.

My Life as an SMA Intern

informatik_blog

Where to start? Well, my very first working day at SMA is probably the most logical choice. On that day, I received a warm and open welcome, which made the whole process of joining the company much easier. In fact, I felt very much a part of a team from the get-go.

Smart Leasing

Smart Leasing

More and more Americans are using photovoltaics to become independent from rising electricity prices. However, most of them are no longer purchasing their PV systems; instead, they are choosing a complete solar service package, an option that is also referred to as solar leasing. Leasing instead of buying – a business model, which established itself in the automobile industry years ago, could also become a worldwide model for success in the solar sector. An interview with Edward Fenster, one of the founders and CEO of Sunrun, and Bates Marshall, vice president of medium power solutions at SMA America.

SMA Australia on Ice

ice_sma_australia
My first day out with my fellow team members at the SMA subsidiary in Sydney

In faraway Australia, people find it important to feel a sense of community. Our new manager, Martin Reinmöller-Kringel, celebrated his new job by hosting a barbeque for everyone a few weeks ago. Shortly before that, last month’s birthday persons were treated to a cake with a candle for each one of them. And…well, I could go on and on, but the point is that for this reason I was definitely not about to miss the team’s trip to the local ice skating rink.

Life-Saving PV: Electricity Supply for Tsunami Early Warning System

SMA Tsunami warning system

During the Christmas season of 2004, a tsunami flooded the Indonesian coast and thousands of people lost their lives. In the wake of this disaster, around 100 early warning systems were installed at sea for the early detection of tsunamis. The measuring devices may look like inconspicuous buoys but are actually extremely sensitive and highly complex.

SMA Researches E-Mobility

SMA Wallbox

A black-and-white compact car, a thick cable with an oversized plug in the fuel tank opening, a gray box about the size of an inverter, and a PC. At first glance, the whole thing looks a bit like a gas station – only without the smell of gasoline. And I’m not too far off the mark: This is SMA’s research on e-mobility.

Profitable Nightshift for Inverters

Gunkul

Large PV power plants like Europe’s largest thin-film PV power plant commissioned in Templin, Brandenburg/Germany recently, need large amounts of reactive power which have to be compensated often also at night. With Q at Night, PV power plants that implement plant solutions from SMA can now also provide the reactive power needed at night and not only during daytime.
