Photovoltaics in the Crosshairs – The Real Reasons behind the Planned Cuts in Germany

Photovoltaik-stoert-BLOG1

The air is getting thinner for the major players of the conventional energy industry in Germany – their once stable business model has eroded over the years and, along with it, their influence over the highest echelons of political power. If they could have predicted eleven years ago that photovoltaics and wind energy would become as widespread and technologically advanced as they are today in Germany, then the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) as an effective policy for subsidizing renewable energy would never have passed.

Women Engineers from around Hessen Hosted at SMA

DSCN2632

Women and technology don’t mix? With us they do. On March 14, 7 female mentors and 19 mentorees were welcomed at SMA to get to know the company. Many of the mentorees are currently studying subjects such as electrical engineering, environmental engineering, informatics and nano-structural science at universities throughout Hessen. Others have finished studying and are now working on PhDs in physics, material science or mechanics. Quite impressive. The participating female mentors were all experienced engineers from prominent companies such as Merck, Hewlett-Packard and Siemens. The majority of participants came from south Hessen.

Congratulations to the Trainees

azubis_ehrung

It is finally over! This Spring, 41 trainees and 13 participants in the re-training program successfully completed their final exams. A cause for celebration, which is why SMA threw a party for all graduates and their families. Following the graduation ceremony, speeches were given by Stefan Brinck (Vice President of HR, Germany), Martina Fischmann (Vocational Training Director) and Jan-Hendrik Welzel (Chairman of the Youth and Trainees council). Afterwards, the trainees could toast their success with sparkling wine and Hors d'oeuvres. Things turned sentimental during a slide show of photos taken throughout the training years of the graduating class.

From Paradise to the German Army to SMA

adrian_central2

How did an adolescent who could hardly speak German and only had limited understanding of electrical systems become a trainer for PV inverters?
I would like to tell a short story about my career and the opportunities I took advantage of in this blog. My story begins in 1998 in the northern rural region of an idyllic island in the Atlantic (La Palma). After I completed the elementary school program offered at the Santo Domingo secondary school, I was already convinced that I did not have a future here, unless I became a farmer or fisherman. This is why it became quite obvious to me that I had to say “adios, La Palma”. I headed off on my journey into the unknown. But what now? Where to?

“At the Playground with Radiation Detectors”

Japanes demonstrators

Makiko Hayashi-Witolla is a native Japanese living in Luxembourg. She learns firsthand about the effects that the March 2011 tsunami and disaster in Fukushima are having on her homeland, even one year later. Her family and friends who live in Nagoya (about 400 kilometers from Fukushima) have to cope with a completely new daily life. I had the opportunity to speak with Makiko Hayashi-Witolla.

Starting the day with a bang!

demo

Sleepily, with no idea of the time, I opened my eyes. Out of habit, I grabbed my phone to see what time it was. A few seconds later, I was shocked to realize that it was already half past five! I had about twenty minutes to get ready, or I'd miss the demonstration in Berlin!
Why didn't I just sleep in and miss the demonstration?
Here's the story from the beginning: I had spent a quiet, relaxing Sunday not just watching television (including a fascinating debate on public television about nuclear energy), but also getting myself mentally prepared to participate in a demonstration for the first time in my life.
